Joseph Kamaru (KMRU) is a Nairobi-born, Berlin-based sound artist whose work resides in the realms of field recordings, found sound and improvisation. His music contains a humbling weightlessness that feels transportive - rooted in audible ephemera, street noise and human musings. In his own words “my work posits expanded listening cultures of sonic thoughts and sound practices; sometimes a question or proposition to consider and reflect on auditory cultures beyond perceived norms.” Beyond his scholarly activities, Joseph has produced bespoke compositions for Adidas, Porsche and Object & Animal, and possesses an innate ability to convey human emotion through the pairing of immersive sound with anamorphic content. His albums - 2020's Peel, Opaquer and Jar, and 2021's Logue - received high praise from Pitchfork, NPR and Crack Magazine. His most recent release, Limen, is a collaborative album with Aho Ssan on Subtext. KMRU (a Shape+ Platform artist) has presented works at CTM Festival, Mutek and The Barbican.
